The difference between compost and mulch:

Finished compost is relatively fine-textured. It is dug into soil as an organic amendment.

Mulch is coarser and heavier. It is used over the soil.

The difference between organic and inorganic:

Organic materials were once alive.

Organic Soil Amendments for Colorado Soils:

  • Compost
  • Aged manure
  • Sphagnum peat moss

Only organic soil amendments should be used in Colorado.

        Organic Mulches:

  • Bark
  • Wood chips or shredded wood
  • Christmas tree and other conifer branches
  • Straw and hay

Inorganic materials were never alive.

        Inorganic mulches:
