Pennisetum alopecuroides
Fountain grass - Chinese pennisetum is a perennial grass that grows in a slowly expanding
clump, 2-4' tall and just as wide. It has narrow, linear leaves that are flat, 12-20"
long, less than one half inch wide. The arching mound of bright green foliage turns golden
brown in winter. The flower spikelets are borne in bristly yellowish to purplish cylinders
to 8" long. They resemble bottle brushes, and are at their peak in summer and begin
to disintegrate by early winter. |

Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum'
Purple Fountain Grass has a symmetrical and mounding habit. The
reddish-purple racemes may be 12" in length and arch gracefully above the burgundy
foliage in late summer. After the first killing frosts, this ornamental grass fades to
amber, and continues to be a welcomed addition to the winter landscape. It introduces
motion with every breeze. An annual in our climate. |

Miscanthus sinensis
maiden grass - This group of ornamental grasses are excellent perennials.
They are clump forming plants with reed-like stems and leaves that are narrow and arch to
the ground. The flower heads are puffy plumes that form in late summer to fall and make
good cut or dried flowers. Most species are moderately frost hardy, like full sun, and
have low water requirements. |
