Program Description: Small Acreage Management (SAM)

Program Responsibility:

Small acreage management encompasses most aspects of farming and ranching where the operations are limited to a few acres or not intended to be fully commercial in nature. The most numerous contacts result from pasture, hay, and livestock operators. However, other crops, including alternative and organically produced are included in the responsibilities of this position.

Personal Information:

I am a native of Oregon, where I gained much of my agricultural and business experience. I also spent two years in southern Arizona. My interests are in the areas of sustainability, communication, and community involvement with emphasis on promoting strength in local and regional agriculture, which supports and is supported by local communities. I read widely on socioeconomic, political and environmental issues and enjoy travel, especially in arid and tropical areas (warm and sunny) of the US and southern/central Pacific.

Job Experience:

I have experience in Cooperative Extension work in Oregon as an area agent in livestock, pasture, and related soil fertility. Direct agricultural experience includes sheep ranching, raising horticultural and field crops, and business consulting. Other business experience includes domestic and export marketing of livestock feed, as well as real estate sales and management.

Doctoral research and academic interests lie in the practical aspects of human and organizational interaction and dynamics. I am particularly interested in how people function to mold organizations and how they respond to the context that the organization imposes on them.
