Are You New to Delta County 4-H?

We want 4-H to be an enjoyable and educational experience for the whole family. To that end, our goal at the Extension Office is make 4-H as user-friendly as possible. Ways for parents and members to make the most of their first year follow:

~ Read your newsletter! Your newsletter is the way the Extension Office communicates with its 4-H families. If you do not receive your newsletter each month, call Karen, at the Extension Office. Karen can be reached at (970) 874-2195. The office FAX number is (970) 874-2192, and you can also e-mail us at delta@coop.ext.colostate.edu. You can also stop by the office to have questions answered and to obtain information. We are located at 525 Dodge Street, in Delta, and our office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

~ Parents, keep a calendar for each 4-H'er in your family. Write down events attended and activities in which members have participated. This can include the number of times a recipe was prepared for the family, times spent readying the 4-H'er for the fair, or other events. This type of information will greatly reduce stress at record book time.

~ Don't be afraid to say, "I'll help." 4-H is a volunteer-driven organization. You probably have a talent that can benefit youngsters. Jump right in and you will be surprised how club leaders will welcome your assistance, and how much more quickly you will become acquainted with other parents and 4-H procedure.

~ Attend 4-H club meetings. Each monthly meeting provides the opportunity for your 4-H'er to interact with their peers and to learn new life skills. It is also a chance for you, as a parent, to learn what you can do to help provide your child with a broad array of skills and abilities as he or she grows into a productive adult. 4-H'ers succeed with parental involvement!

~ Ask! Ask! Ask! Never be shy about asking "who," "what," "where," "when," or "why." Ask our leaders, ask an "old timer" parent, or call the Extension Office. Feeling lost, but don't know which question to ask? This is a feeling we can identify with! We would rather spend time visiting with you before an emergency occurs, than try to figure out how to fix it after the fact, because there are some things even we can't fix!

~ As for leaders and experienced 4-H parents - remember how you felt the first year your children were in 4-H? Be free with your explanations and helpful tips. We are all in this together!
