Youth
Development
These
days, it's natural to worry about what your kids are getting into.
But when you enroll your child in a youth development program,
chances are it's going to be fun, informative and educational.
What
is youth development? Youth development
is the process of mental, physical, social and emotional growth
during which young people prepare to live a productive and
satisfying life within the customs and guidelines of their society.
(ref. Colorado 4-H
Youth Development Handbook, CSU, Fort Collins, CO 9/1/04 version).
What
are some youth activities? Youth
development activities include after-school programs, annual
talent shows, art shows, community service projects, 4-H Clubs,
County and State Fair exhibits, leadership training programs, public
speaking competitions, international exchange opportunities, and
scholarship awards.
Why
is youth development important? Youth
development programs in Arapahoe County create supportive
environments where culturally diverse youth and adults are able to
reach their fullest potential.
Ultimately, by giving youth the tools to become capable,
competent, caring citizens, these programs also help strengthen
families and create strong, safe communities.
As
the "front door" to Colorado State University, Arapahoe County CSU
Extension benefits from its research in youth development and
expertise as a land-grant university. Our goal is to provide
opportunities for youth to experience and practice skills they can
use on a daily basis and that will last them a lifetime. From
building confidence and social abilities to learning specific skills
including gardening, art and animal care, youth development
strengthens our communities by preparing children for the real
world. In pursuit of our goal, we are dedicated to
identifying, building, supporting and promoting positive youth
focused activities. |
