Advancement Levels

Background of the Program:

The Advancement Levels program is a logical step-by-step guide to teach youth horsemanship and horse care. The Advancement Level chapter in the 4-H Horse Member’s Manual serves as a leader’s and member’s guide. This chapter explains the basics of the Levels program.

Safety and proper basics are stressed throughout the Levels program. The skills learned in the beginning levels are reflected in properly mastering the more advanced levels. A solid and consistent foundation is extremely important.

It should be recognized that not every youth will want to master all levels. However, it should be realized that the first two levels teach the basics of horse safety, care and riding for general pleasure and performance. It is therefore encouraged that all members participate in at least Levels I and II. Level III is for the serious horse person and Level IV is for the youth that is interested in a career in the equine industry or is very serious about his/her riding and training.

Purpose:

The Advancement Level program is a teaching guide which combines many aspects of horsemanship and horse care. The 4-H levels program is designed to apply to Western, Working Ranch Horse and all disciplines within the English division (Hunter Seat, Saddle Seat and Dressage Seat).

Click here and scroll down to find the List of Approved Raters. Make sure to check that this rater is certified in the right level/discipline you wish to be tested on.

It is recommended to review prior to testing the Written Test Study Guide and Riding Test Outline. Click here and scroll down to find Study Guides and Riding Tests.

For those interested in being a levels rater:

To become a levels rater, individuals must complete the rater training and re-certify every three years to continue rating. Trainings include a general introduction to the program followed by discipline specific sessions. Raters may become certified any level or any discipline with which they have a base knowlege and may perform ratings for only those levels/disciplines with which they are certified. See below for up and comming trainings...

Horse ID Sheets

Horse ID sheets are due June 1st and can be turned into your 4-H leader or the extension office.

Horse ID sheets need to be completed once a horse is added to the 4-H project.  For instance, if you are a new member, then you need to turn in a Horse ID sheet with enrollment.  If you are a returning member, the Horse Leaders Council still has your ID sheet from the prior year and you don’t need to do anything unless your are changing horses or adding an additional horse.

Horse Leaders Council maintains a book with your horse sheets by club.  A list is generated for your leader In March and July which shows your horse by 4-H member.  If you have changes throughout the year, like you sold your horse or the horse dies, your leader needs to know, so your record can be updated.

For 4-H shows, members should only show a horse that has an ID sheet on file for that 4-Her.  At fair, then the sheets are referenced against entries for eligibility and also that they are in the proper halter classes.  Don’t wait until the June 1st deadline to turn in your sheet as it is a busy time of year with the conclusion of school.  Download your record book now, then type in your horse ID sheet, print that page for your leader, and then you already have a page in your record book complete.  It doesn’t hurt to update your ID sheet and turn it in to your leaders.  Use the horse ID sample to correctly fill out the information, then pass it on.

Many 4-Hers wonder whether they should ID all the horses they have access too or just concentrate on one horse.  This is a personal preference for each individual 4-Her.  Usually, 4-Hers are only working with one horse at a time, others use different horses for events such as gymkana versus horsemanship, and others like to have a backup in case a horse is lame during fair.  Either way, all horses that are identified as project horses need to be in the record book.  Leaders check this when project books are complete and if all the horses aren’t included, the 4-Her has an incomplete year which affects the 4-H club.

If a leader or 4-H needs a copy of their ID sheet, they can e-mail me and I will scan a copy back.  I would recommend at this point, if in doubt, make a new sheet.
