Gardening in the Pikes Peak Region Series

Classes are offered on Tuesday afternoons or Thursday evenings (except for the Sept 17 Native Plants class) and are held at the CSU Extension office at 305 S. Union Blvd. (need directions?)

Fall and Winter Turf Care
Want the best lawn in the neighborhood in 2004? Come and learn the recipe for maintaining your turf grass. Learn the fundamentals of lawn care and the techniques of turf renovation. An action plan is presented to show you when to apply the fundamentals and techniques during the fall and winter seasons.

Sept 9 or Sept 11

Landscaping with Native Plants
In response to our on-going drought conditions, residents of El Paso County are considering renovating their landscapes with lower-water-use plants. We will examine the differing growing conditions around our homes and match those growing conditions with plants which grow naturally in our local "life zones." Come explore the tremendous diversity of beautiful native plants and tips for growing them.

Planting for Dry Shade

Four Seasons in the Garden - Part I: Flowering Perennials
Season-long bloom in the perennial gardens is possible by considering the bloom time of each variety and planting a diverse array of plants. By careful plant selection and a well thought-out design, perennial gardens can provide color early spring to fall, with a constantly changing array of textures and foliage.

Sept 30 or Oct 2

Four Seasons in the Garden - Part II: Ornamental Grasses; Foliage, Bark and Berries
Autumn and winter conjure up pictures of gardens going to seed and dying back. But ornamental grasses come into their own during this time of year. They catch the light, sway in the wind, and are sculpted by snow. Your trees and shrubs can also play a large part in adding interest to the fall and winter garden with colorful foliage, interesting branching patterns, bark, berries and seedheads.

Oct 7 or Oct 9

Pruning for Health and Beauty
Learn the basics of tree and shrub pruning, some of the "no - no's" that have been perpetuated and how to correct damage from storms. There will also be pruning demonstrations and hands-on, so bring your pruning shears!

Oct 14 or Oct 16

The cost is $5 for individual classesand $25 for all six classes. To register for Gardening in the Pikes Peak Regions classes, please do one of the following:

  • Call 636-8923 or e-mail lindasmith@elpasoco.com and ask that a print copy of the class schedule and registration form be sent to you. Follow the instructions on the registration form you receive.
