Gardening in the Pikes Peak Region

Fall 2006 Class Schedule

Advanced registration is recommended. See the registration information at the bottom of this page.

Classes are offered on Tuesday afternoons or Thursday evenings and, unless noted otherwise, are held at the CSU Extension office at 305 S. Union Blvd. (need directions?)

(Note: The first and last classes of this series are held at the Colorado Springs Utilities Xeriscape Demonstration Garden, 2855 Mesa Rd.)

Save Water and Save Money:
Seven practical ways to make your landscape irrigation system more effective

Joe Dixon, Certified Irrigation Designer/Certified Irrigation Auditor, will help you understand how your sprinkler system works and will explain how to make it work more effectively. The presentation will include suggestions on retrofitting an existing system to accommodate changes in your landscape, especially when turf areas may be converted to planting beds. He will address both turf irrigation for lawns and drip irrigation for trees and planting beds.

Propagating Perennial Plants: Grow Your Garden through Cuttings and Seeds
We will cover practical information you can use to propagate plants from cuttings and seeds for your garden. Many perennials have special cultural requirements for seed germination. We will teach you several tips and tricks to overcome these natural barriers. We will also cover the science behind growing herbaceous and woody plants from cuttings and how to apply these principles in the home landscape.

A Seasonal Guide to Gardening
Learn what gardening tasks should be done each season in the Pikes Peak region, and receive a laminated checklist guide that can be used for years to come.

Rose Basics
Give your roses what they want and they won’t let you down. Here are all of the important issues you need for healthy roses, including winterizing. (Next spring will be the class on rose selection ­ a complex topic.)

Firewise : Reducing Your Wildfire Risk and Meeting the Approved Plants
Colorado Springs Fire Department wants to help you mitigate the flammable plant choices on your property for better defense the next time the weather turns against us. Many well-known and not so well-known plants may be just the substitute you are looking for.

Composting and Urban Biodiversity
The ‘Do’s and Don’ts’ of recycling yard and kitchen waste, and what to do with it when it has decomposed. Also, how your garden connects to the local ecology, including weeds, rainwater and the ‘natives.’

Vines and Viny Vegetables
Whether a vine is a decorative focus or a delightful visual barrier, every garden wants a vine or two. And even more fun are all of the vertical vegetables in both selection and treatment. This is a great opportunity to plan for next year before the catalogs fill the mailbox.

Registration Information

The cost is $8 for individual classes, $45 for all eight regular classes. To register for Gardening in the Pikes Peak Regions classes, please do one of the following:

  • Call 636-8923 or e-mail lindasmith@elpasoco.com and ask to be registered for the classes you want to attend. You'll be given information on where to send your payment.
