Gardening in the Pikes Peak Region

Spring 2005 Class Schedule

Advanced registration is recommended. See the registration information at the bottom of this page.

Classes are offered on Tuesday afternoons or Thursday evenings and are held at the CSU Extension office at 305 S. Union Blvd. (need directions?)

Evergreens and Ever' grays
Winter can be a beautiful season in the Colorado landscape. Discover plants that add interest to the garden all year long, including traditional evergreens, as well as other plants often overlooked for their winter beauty.

Mar 3, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Container Gardening
We will explore the many uses containers have in the landscape, especially the ways in which containers expand possibilities in the xeriscape. Then we’ll look at information such as placement, container and plant selection, potting soils and maintenance to make container gardening a success.

Best Perennials for the High Plains
Learn all about the top-rated perennials that are ideal for xeriscapes, rock and wildflower gardens and the traditional perennial border.

The Colorado Bug
Emphasis will be on those insect species most likely to be encountered in a yard and garden here in Colorado, particularly those that injure plants and/or visit our homes in search of a warm place to overwinter.

Alternative Turfs
Explore the use of turf grasses other than bluegrass for lawns in El Paso County. Establishment, culture and sources will be discussed. Also, groundcover options for larger areas will be covered.

Mar 31, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Veggie Gardening in the Pikes Peak Region - Class I
The first hour will consist of lecture/discussion of soil preparation, crop selection, advantages of raised bed gardening and layout. The second hour will be a demonstration of raised bed building and double digging to prepare the soil, and planting.
Because part of this class will be held outdoors, please dress appropriately.

Apr 5, 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Veggie Gardening in the Pikes Peak Region - Class II
The first hour will be a discussion of water delivery options, the veggie garden calendar, and staging to obtain yields throughout the growing season. The second hour will be a demonstration of installing a drip system in a raised bed, and also some planting.
Because part of this class will be held outdoors, please dress appropriately.

Apr 26, 2:00-4:00 p.m.
(no Thurs evening class)

These classes may be of particular interest not only to the general public, but also to individuals who work with children and the elderly, such as teachers, day-care providers and agency activity directors.

Registration Information

The cost is $7 for individual classes, $42 for all seven classes, or $30 for the five evening classes. To register for Gardening in the Pikes Peak Regions classes, please do one of the following:
