Spring 2006 Class Schedule

Help us celebrate 25 years of Xeriscape® in our community.
Our Spring 2006 series will emphasize the seven principles of xeriscaping and gardening challenges in El Paso County.

Advanced registration is recommended. See the registration information at the bottom of this page.

Classes are offered on Tuesday afternoons or Thursday evenings and are held at the CSU Extension office at 305 S. Union Blvd. (need directions?)

Western Water History & Introduction to Xeriscaping
(The way to Garden in Colorado)

Xeriscape® was originally developed in Colorado to help meet the challenge of gardening in a semi-arid climate.
Today, Xeriscape® principles help gardeners throughout the world craft regionally appropriate landscapes that evoke a sense of place. The Seven Principles of Xeriscape® introduce the concepts that will be covered throughout the spring gardening series.
Get the big picture while you learn the fundamentals of how to create a beautiful Colorado landscape.

The Seeds of Success: Starting Your Garden from Seed
Whether starting your seeds inside early or outside later, this class will cover the ‘how to’ as you plan annuals, perennials and vegetables for the coming season.

Groundwork – The Scoop on Dirt & an Irrigation Overview
We’ll dissolve the confusion of how to use soil amendments, soil preparation, organic and inorganic (rock) mulches, and more. Learn what to do and what not to do to amend the soil in Colorado Springs, followed by a brief discussion of watering choices.

Healthy Landscaping Through Hydrozoning
Would you like to have a beautiful landscape featuring healthy plants, and yet conserve water at the same time? Organizing your landscape into “hydrozones” is one of the most critical steps in landscape planning. This presentation is suited to everyone who would like to install, modify or retrofit your yard into an attractive, water-wise home landscape. We’ll give you lots of practical ideas for beautiful plant combinations that have matching water requirements.

Part 1 – Turf - Fundamentals are the Answer
Part 2 - Ornamental Grasses

This class shows the benefits of practicing the four fundamentals of lawn care: aerating, fertilizing, watering and mowing. Practice and you shall receive green grass. And what about the wilder side of grasses, which require cutting only once a year ?

Successful Vegetable Gardens
Tired or frustrated by poor results in your vegetable garden? Afraid to even start because of the horticultural horror stories you've heard? Learn how you can be successful growing vegetables in this challenging region. Special attention will be made to soil preparation, plant selection, and water conservation. You don't need to avoid having a productive garden anymore.

The cost is $8 for individual classes, $50 for all nine regular classes. To register for Gardening in the Pikes Peak Regions classes, please do one of the following:
