Please direct all questions to Devin in the Extension Office at 520-7675.

Social Media refers to websites where the users interact to create the content, such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.  Social media of all types has become a very powerful tool – and has been used for both good and evil.  We hope that as parents and leaders, you can help to encourage youth to use social media for productive purposes, such as stimulating and expanding the 4-H program!

Colorado State University recently laid out a very specific social media policy that all staff are expected to abide by.  Currently the regulations are not quite so strict for 4-H clubs.  The basic expectation is that anything posted on 4-H club social media pages will follow the best practices laid out by Colorado State University.  While our intent is not to micro-manage our 4-H clubs social media use, it is important for us to know what social media pages are associated with El Paso County 4-H and who is in charge of them – should there be a concern or a compliment that we need to direct to them.

If your club already has a Facebook or other social media page, please get the social media application filled out and sent back to us by March 31, 2011.  If your club is planning to create a Facebook page, please submit this application within one week of creating the page.  The application includes all of the rules that currently apply to 4-H clubs and social media.

El Paso County 4-H Social Media Rules

You must:

  1. Have at least two administrators on your account, one of which must be a 4-H leader.  Both administrators should frequently monitor the account and immediately remove anything inappropriate.
  2. Read and understand the Colorado State University Social Media Best Practices recommendations. http://socialmedia.colostate.edu/page/Social-Media-Policy.aspx
  3. Know that any violation of the rules stated above is a violation of the Colorado 4-H Code of Conduct, and those responsible will no longer be in good standing with the 4-H program.
  4. Must have your page approved by Colorado State University Extension in El Paso County. Please note that at this time you do not need to have your account approved by Colorado State University at the state level, just at the county level.

You must NOT:

  1. Provide any false information or impersonate others.
  2. Create another account without permission if Facebook disables your account.
  3. Use your 4-H page or group for your own commercial gain or for communications or activities that are purely personal in nature.
  4. Share your password or do anything to jeopardize the security of your account.
  5. Post content or take action that infringes or violates someone else's rights.
  6. Post or knowingly permit the posting of content or any other use of your 4-H account to cause harm, embarrassment, defamation, insult, or injury to any person or entity. This does not prohibit frank discussions, criticism, or opinion. The following content and online activity is strictly prohibited: lewd or indecent conduct, threat of physical harm, stalking, forgery, intentional disruption of university or county activities, advocating or causing the damage or destruction of university or county property, illegal discrimination, harassment (including sexual harassment), or any intentionally malicious, defamatory, degrading, or hateful material.
  7. Post content or take action that violates the law.
  8. Post identification documents or sensitive or confidential financial, medical, educational, or other personal information of any person without that person’s express, prior consent.
  9. Tag users or send e-mail invitations to non-users without their consent.
