Did you know. . .

Our 4-H program is run by volunteers? Tommy, Verla, Becky, & Edna are paid staff. Otherwise, anyone you see doing any kind of work with the 4-H program in Fremont County does so as a VOLUNTEER!

No pay, only your thanks for doing a great job and their own satisfaction of a job well done. So whether it's the person who weighs your animals each week, the person who sets up the fair displays, or the person who helps you with your projects, that person is working hard for you for no pay!

Please take some time to tell them how much you appreciate what they do for you. This program wouldn't happen if it weren't for the countless volunteers who work their hearts out for it. Please remember to say, “Thanks for all you do for us!”

PS—Handshakes & hugs are okay, too.

Help Needed

***Senior Ambassadors are needed to help with Senior Day, Friday, August 1. You will help seniors with their breakfast, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Then act as a host or hostess for them to enjoy the fair! Guide them to the animals, show them the inside exhibits, or just answer questions for them. Enjoy Bubbles the Clown, make visors, lots of fun! Call Irene White at 276-2871 to volunteer. Leave a message; she'll call you back!

PS—Remember the possibility of earning a 4-H letter? Being a Senior Ambassador is one of the qualification areas!

***Do you have any items you could donate for the seniors' goodie bags? This is a great way to spread the word about your business or club! Talk to Irene about that as well!

*** What will you do for Kids' Day? It's time to let us know what activity your club can do for Kids' Day. Can you do face painting? A cake or cookie walk? Teach kids to rope? Bean bag toss? Other games? How about a dunking booth? We have lots of other ideas, but we know you have ideas too. We will have lots and lots of little kids who want to see what you can do! Please call our Kids' Day chairman, Barry Acton to confirm what your club will do. Barry: 276-2360 or 784-6119 ; bacton@amfam.com or Actonfamily6776@msn.com

*** We still have two shifts for the 4-H concession stand to fill. The first is Kid's Day and Lunch in a Jiffy on Friday, August 1, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The second one is the last shift of the fair, from 4:00 p.m. until closing on Sunday, August 3. These are both extremely important times to keep the concession stand open. If we don't have a club to work the shift, we will try to keep it open by individual volunteers, making a team together! If you are willing to help out for either of those times, even if only for a couple hours, call the Extension Office to let us know.

4-H Foundation to Raffle Ford Truck

The Rocky Mountain Ford Stores recently donated a 2008 Ford XLT F150 4x4 pickup truck to the Colorado 4-H Foundation to help raise funds for 4-H. Raffle tickets will be sold for the next six months by Foundation board members, Extension staff and 4-H members and leaders.

The truck, valued at nearly $33,000, will be equipped with popular options, including a flex-fuel engine allowing it to run on regular gasoline or E-85 ethanol. The drawing will be held at the Metro Area Support 4-H (M*A*S*H) Gala being held Oct. 11, 2008 at the Wings over the Rockies Air and Space Museum in Denver.

“Ford and 4-H share similar values,” said Michael Grammes, Denver Region Marketing Manager for Ford Motor Company. “Both organizations stress the importance of education, environmental stewardship, diversity and community involvement, and we at Ford are honored to be able to support the members of 4-H.”

4-H Ford Truck

Raffle tickets to win the 2008 F-150 are just $20 each. Five dollars from each ticket will be returned to the Fremont 4-H Foundation. The remaining funds will be used to fund special projects for county and state 4-H programs through a RFP (Request for Funds) process.

The F-series truck from Ford has been the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. for the past 31 years. For more information about Ford or the F-150, visit www.fordvehicles.com .

2008 Fremont County Fair Alert!

Premises ID Numbers

WILL BE REQUIRED for all Market Animals (excluding rabbits) to be eligible to sell at the 2008 County Fair

At the April 8, 2008 meeting of the Fremont County Fair Board, the Fremont County Fairs and Shows Association (Livestock Sale Committee) presented a recommendation to REQUIRE PREMISES ID numbers for ALL MARKET ANIMALS (excluding rabbits) to be eligible to sell at the 2008 Fremont County Fair. The Premises ID number is for the location where the animals are kept. Whoever owns the land should apply for the Premises ID number. This recommendation was approved unanimously by the Fair Board.

Premises ID numbers must be obtained and given to the extension office BEFORE arrival at the county fair to be eligible to sell. To help our record keeping, please turn it in as soon as possible.

There are three (3) ways that you can get a Premises ID number.

1. The easiest and fastest way to get a Premises ID is to call, toll free, 1-877-842-0102 . It takes about 5 minutes. (I recommend this method)

2. Pick up a post card at the extension office, fill it out, and we will fax it to the Colorado Department of Agriculture for you. Or you can fax it to 1-303-239-4164 .

3. You can go on-line, www.usda.gov/nais and follow the directions. However, there are many pages to navigate and it is time consuming. (I don't recommend this method)

Please direct any questions to Tommy L. Covington, County Director at 276-7390 .

Livestock Signs for Fremont County Fair

T he Fremont County Fair Board is requiring ALL livestock (large animal) exhibitors to have an official Fremont County Fair sign on each pen. The Fair Board has reusable vinyl signs for purchase or rent. Signs will be $3.00 each. If you choose to rent a sign the $3.00 per sign deposit will be refunded when the sign(s) are returned in good condition. You can purchase signs at the Extension Office.

Pen Fee

The Fremont County Fair Board has decided to charge a $5.00 per pen fee this year, payable at check-in for all beef, sheep, goats, swine and dairy projects. The fee will be used to pay someone to do the final after-fair cleanup of the livestock pens for all large animals. Members will be required to care for their animals and pens as usual during the fair. Animals must be left with food and fresh water after the livestock sale. Final pen cleaning will be done by someone hired by the Fair Board.

Questions regarding this policy may be directed to members of the Fremont County Fair Board, or to the Extension Office.

Are you interested in bidding on the cleanup job? Let us know! This could be a club, family, or individual.

Fremont County Setup Day

On Saturday, July 26 we will be cleaning, fixing, and setting up for the Fremont County Fair. There will be lots to do and we need lots of people to help out. Come early ( 9:00 a.m. ) and stay for lunch! The Fremont County Cattlewomen will be providing a special barbecue lunch, beginning at 11:00 a.m. , for all 4-H families who help with clean up. It's free, and it's for YOU! Be sure to come, work, have lunch and say "Thank You" to the Cattlewomen!

Trash Barrel Project at County Fair

Our trash barrel project at the Fremont County Fair will happen again this year. Clubs are assigned a trash barrel, and asked to keep it empty throughout the fair. The Fair Board would like us to do it again. Some clubs reported that they “couldn't find” their barrels, so maps of the barrel locations will be posted in the building and in the barns. Your club's name will be on your barrel. Not only does this help the fairgrounds stay looking nice, it provides a great service to the Fair Board and people who attend the fair. Remember, we have NO paid staff for the fairgrounds! We depend entirely on volunteers like YOU! Clubs are encouraged to assign members and leaders times to empty their barrels. Perhaps they could have specific “shifts” that they work. Let's make it work this year. We want our grounds to look great!

By the way—trash cans are for trash! NO MANURE is to go in the cans!

Check Out the Chicks at the County Fair!

Be sure to come by the back room of the 4-H building and check out the cute little chicks at the county fair! Just another time to see our 4-H in action!

E-Records CD'S Are Available

If you need a CD to access your e-records, they are currently available in the Extension Office. The CD includes the appropriate e-record for each 4-H project, as well as State Fair Exhibit Requirements. There is no charge for the CD, but we are limiting one per family. E-records can also be accessed at: www.colorado4h.org

NOTE: For your convenience, there is a computer and printer set up at the 4-H Building. If you wish to use it, you may check out a building key in the Extension Office, and go there to work on your records. There should be a CD in the drive and it's all ready to go. If you have problems with the computer or printer, be sure to let us know so we can take care of the problem!

Project E-Records

(General and Animal)

ALL 4-H members enrolled in General and Livestock Projects are required to use the new E-Record Book and appropriate supplemental pages.

The 4-H Project E-Record is now ready for distribution and posted on the website at www.4h.colostate.edu . In the right column click on “Project Resources + Record Books”. Scroll down the page and click on the record book or supplement you need.

The following Family & Consumer and General Project supplemental pages need to be printed in landscape format: Bread, Cake, Ceramics, Foods, Nutrition, Baking, and Heritage Arts.

The Livestock & Horse E-Record book prints out in landscape and so do the livestock supplemental sheets.

You will have four (4) options to complete the record book.

1. You will be able to input your data into the computer and when the record book is finished you will print it off.

2. You can print the record book off first and fill it in by hand.

3. If you do not have computer and/or internet access contact the Extension Office and we will provide you with the record book. You will have to fill it in by hand.

4. If you have a computer but do not have internet access contact the Extension Office and we will provide you with a CD that you can download onto your computer.

Remember neatness counts on your project and record books.

When finished and ready to turn in your records, put General and Family, Consumer Science records into a plain paper binder. No 3-ring binders (notebooks), no presentation covers with the clear cover and plastic slider. On the front of the binder be sure to put your name, project, unit and 4-H age as of Dec. 31 st . Be sure to have your leaders and parents sign your records!

Livestock records should be stapled, but not put into any binder or cover. If you have questions on the E-record please call the Extension Office.

We encourage you to send more than 2 if you can, the more people we have to help the better. If you come to judge you MUST be on time and stay the entire day! You have a year to plan for this!!
