4-H AMBASSADORS NEEDED FOR SENIOR CITIZEN DAY

Are you interested in earning a letter in 4-H? One requirement is to be an Ambassador.

It's easy and fun! All that you have to do is assist the senior citizens on Seniors'/Kids' Day at the Fremont County Fair. We serve the seniors breakfast, hand out goodies to them, and escort them around the fair showing off all of the projects. You work from 7:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Friday, July 31st.

What do you get? First and foremost, fun with the seniors! You also receive a free 4-H T-shirt, a hat or sun visor, a free great breakfast, and are one step closer to lettering!

Any age is accepted; if the 4-H'er is old enough to be on their own with minimal supervision, then call for a spot. If your 4-H'er needs supervision, you are welcome to join us and you, too, will have fun!

We are aware that some 4-H'ers have shows on that day. You can still serve as an Ambassador and leave at the time that you need to. Be sure to let Irene know so she can plan around your schedule.

If you know of anyone who has free handouts or goodies that we can put into the senior's bags, please call Irene. We love giving freebies!!

Call Irene White at 276-2871 and leave a message.

Best news—we have them for sale in the Extension Office for only $2 each! You will have the appropriate size, and the cost is a bargain! Don't wait until the last minute. Get yours today!

Fremont County Fair Entries

Important Notice!

Late entries cause problems with animal stalling, show classes, and general project interview scheduling so the Fremont County Fair Board has set the following deadline policy.

A. County Fair entries may be turned in at the CSU Extension Office anytime beginning with when the 2009 Fair Book is posted until 5:00 p.m., July 2, 2009 at no charge.

B. Late entries can be turned in at the CSU Extension Office anytime between July 6, 2009, and July 9, 2009, 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., with a late entry fee of $25.00 per project accompanying the entry (no late entries will be accepted without this fee).

C. After 5:00 p.m., July 9, 2009 absolutely no entries will be accepted regardless of the reason.

Trash Barrel Project at County Fair

Our trash barrel project at the Fremont County Fair will happen again this year. Clubs are assigned a trash barrel, and asked to keep it empty throughout the fair. The Fair Board would like us to do it again.

Some clubs reported that they “couldn't find” their barrels, so maps of the barrel locations will be posted in the building and in the barns. Your club's name will be on your barrel. Not only does this help the fairgrounds stay looking nice, it provides a great service to the Fair Board and people who attend the fair.

Remember, we have NO paid staff for the fairgrounds! We depend entirely on volunteers like YOU! Clubs are encouraged to assign members and leaders times to empty their barrels. Perhaps they could have specific “shifts” that they work.

Let's make it work this year. We want our grounds to look great!

By the way—trash cans are for trash! NO MANURE is to go in the cans!

Community Service Opportunity

The Florence High School band is working toward a trip to Washington, DC for a series of classes with expert musicians as well as a tour of our nation's capital.

To raise money for this opportunity a Casino Night will be held on July 11 at the Florence High School . Volunteers are needed, as well as cash and merchandise donations.

We have several 4-H members who are members of the band. Let's give them your support. For more information, or to volunteer, contact Denise Stoudt at (719) 250-3489.

Fremont County Fair Pen Fee

The Fremont County Fair Board charges a $5.00 per pen fee, payable at check-in for all beef, sheep, goats, swine and dairy projects. The fee will be used to pay someone to do the final after-fair cleanup of the livestock pens for all large animals. Members will be required to care for their animals and pens as usual during the fair. Animals must be left with food and fresh water after the livestock sale. Final pen cleaning will be done by someone hired by the Fair Board.

Questions regarding this policy may be directed to members of the Fremont County Fair Board, or to the Extension Office.

Are you interested in bidding on the cleanup job? Let us know! This could be a club, family, or individual.

Signs for Fremont County Fair

The Fremont County Fair Board requires ALL livestock (large animal) exhibitors to have an official Fremont County Fair sign on each pen. The Fair Board has reusable vinyl signs for purchase. Signs will be $3.00 each. You can purchase signs at the Extension Office.

There will be no rental of signs this year. All signs become the property of the exhibitor.

Premises ID's MUST be on file in the Extension Office BEFORE your County Fair entry will be accepted.

If you turned in a Premises ID in 2007-08 and you are keeping your project(s) at the same location you do not need to turn it in again.

If you move your projects to a new location, you will need a new Premises ID for that location.

Other livestock project members- On-line recommended for Seniors: If you have already taken a MQA class as a Junior and you need to re-certify as a Senior I recommend you do that on the web. This site has study information and a test that 4-H members can print off, take, and turn in to the Extension Office to meet the MQA requirements. We have had several seniors take MQA on the web and they really liked it. The website is: http://livestock.colostate.edu/youth/MQA .

If you choose to do either of these tests you MUST have your completed test turned in to the Extension Office no later than 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 16. After June 16 or if you fail the test you will be required to take the remaining PQA/MQA class on June 17.

County Fair Written Tests

All 4-H members with market animal projects (beef, goats, rabbits, poultry, sheep or swine) as well as horse projects are REQUIRED to take a written test covering educational information regarding that species.

4-H members MUST take the written tests at the Extension Office between 8:00 & 4:00 p.m. (June 2-5) or 7:30 a.m. & 5:00 p.m. (June 8 through July 2). If you come during lunch hours, noon to 2:00, please call ahead to verify that the office will be open.

If you need help reading the test you need to make prior arrangements (an appointment) so we can have someone help you. All tests must be taken by July 2, 2009.

We will be using the same study guides as last year. If you don't have a study guide you may pick one up in the Extension Office. Remember, the written test is one of the sections used to determine Supreme Champions in Market Beef, Goats, Sheep and Swine. Final results of the written tests will be made available after the county fair.

In the case of a tie score, the highest score on the following sections will be used as the tie breaker: 1) short answer section, 2) animal identification, 3) matching section, 4) circle the correct answer section, and 5) true or false section. In the case of multiple scores of 100, ties will be allowed. Written test awards will be presented at Achievement Night.

Helpers Needed: If you can read tests to members who need help, please contact Becky or Edna in the Extension Office to schedule your time. We appreciate our volunteers!

Requirements to Show and/or Sell at the Fremont County Fair

The amount of planning and paper work that has to be done to organize the county fair is tremendous and each exhibitor has certain responsibilities to help make sure that things get done properly.

The Fair Board wants to make sure everyone knows that a 4-H member must meet the following requirements to be allowed to show at the County Fair:

1. Must be enrolled in Fremont County 4-H by the appropriate deadline.

2. Must be enrolled in the project by the appropriate deadline.

3. Must take the Meat Quality Assurance class at the proper ages.

4. Must take the appropriate written tests for horse and market projects by the deadline.

5. Must turn in a COMPLETED entry form (must include ear tag numbers, sex, age, birth dates, tattoos, breed, variety, class numbers, etc. where appropriate) by the deadline.

If any of these five (5) requirements is not met, the 4-H member will NOT be allowed to show at the Fremont County Fair.

The Fair Board also wants to make sure everyone knows that a 4-H member must meet the following requirements to be allowed to sell at the County Fair:

1. Must exhibit their animal and qualify through the proper species show.

2. Must have a picture made (4-H members must be appropriately dressed) for the buyer immediately after the species show.

3. Must fill out and turn in a completed “Sale Order Card” immediately after the last market show that the 4-H member has an entry in.

If any of these three (3) requirements is not met, the 4-H member will NOT be allowed to sell at the Fremont County Fair.
