If you are one of them, please plan to join us on Wednesday, May 20 at 6:00 p.m. at the 4-H Building. We'll have a light supper and then we will spend some time learning about all the things coming up this summer and how to successfully complete your first year of 4-H. Fremont County Fair, entries, exhibits & judging. You will meet some of the Fair Board and learn how it all comes together. We'll talk about other options if you can't exhibit at the Fair. Bring your 4-H members, parents & leaders. Bring lots of questions and we'll have answers. Besides that, we'll bring the food!

This year, because the first Gymkhana has been set for May 30-31 we MUST have your horse certificates BEFORE this show. The new deadline will be May 27, 2009 instead of June 1!
Do You Need A Show Board for Your Project?
If your project requires a show board, display board or science board to complete your project, the size is important! It must be 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide when opened up, and 3 x 2 when folded. Best news—we have them for sale in the Extension Office for only $2 each! You will have the appropriate size, and the cost is a bargain! Don't wait until the last minute. Get yours today!
School Supplies Community Service Opportunity
One of our 4-H leaders has a brother serving in Afghanistan . He has requested school supplies for schools which were destroyed. If you would like to help with this effort, you can bring the items to the Extension Office. For questions, contact Lorri Goebel at 372-3992.
Horse Council
Fund Raising Opportunity
The Horse Council needs a 4-H club to help at the May 30 & 31 horse show. The club will be paid $125.00 plus all concession profits for completing the following responsibilities:
1. Providing concessions for the entire weekend. 7:30 a.m. till finish on Saturday and 3:30 p.m. till finish on Sunday. Reservation of the concession trailer is the club's responsibility.
2. Cleanup of all trash Saturday and Sunday. This will include the arena, surrounding area and parking lot. 55 gallon barrels will be provided; trash bags must be provided by club.
3. Provide at least 250 gallons of potable water each day for use by contestants for their horses.
4. A contract between the club and the Horse Council must be signed by club president and leader prior to the scheduled event.
5. Payment will be made to the club upon satisfactory completion of duties and approval of the show management.

Fremont County Fair Entries
Important Notice!
Late entries cause problems with animal stalling, show classes, and general project interview scheduling so the Fremont County Fair Board has set the following deadline policy.
A. County Fair entries may be turned in at the CSU Extension Office anytime beginning with when the 2009 Fair Book is posted until 5:00 p.m. , July 2, 2009 at no charge.
B. Late entries can be turned in at the CSU Extension Office anytime between July 6, 2009 , and July 10, 2009, 8:00 am - 5:00 p.m. , with a late entry fee of $25.00 per project accompanying the entry (no late entries will be accepted without this fee).
C. After 5:00 p.m. , July 10, 2009 absolutely no entries will be accepted regardless of the reason.
Requirements to Show and/or Sell at the Fremont County Fair
The amount of planning and paper work that has to be done to organize the county fair is tremendous and each exhibitor has certain responsibilities to help make sure that things get done properly.
The Fair Board wants to make sure everyone knows that a 4-H member must meet the following requirements to be allowed to show at the County Fair:
1. Must be enrolled in Fremont County 4-H by the appropriate deadline.
2. Must be enrolled in the project by the appropriate deadline.
3. Must take the Meat Quality Assurance class at the proper ages.
4. Must take the appropriate written tests for horse and market projects by the deadline.
5. Must turn in a COMPLETED entry form (must include ear tag numbers, sex, age, birth dates, tattoos, breed, variety, class numbers, etc. where appropriate) by the deadline.
If any of these five (5) requirements is not met, the 4-H member will NOT be allowed to show at the Fremont County Fair.
The Fair Board also wants to make sure everyone knows that a 4-H member must meet the following requirements to be allowed to sell at the County Fair:
1. Must exhibit their animal and qualify through the proper species show.
2. Must have a picture made (4-H members must be appropriately dressed) for the buyer immediately after the species show.
3. Must fill out and turn in a completed “Sale Order Card” immediately after the last market show that the 4-H member has an entry in.
If any of these three (3) requirements is not met, the 4-H member will NOT be allowed to sell at the Fremont County Fair.

Animal Care and Housing Forms for 4-H Members
ALL 4-H members with animal projects are REQUIRED to fill out an Animal Care Housing Form. This form must be filled out and on file in the Extension Office for a 4-H member to be enrolled in an animal project.
Premises ID Requirements for 2009
The Fremont County Fair Board will REQUIRE all livestock (goats, sheep, swine, and cattle), poultry, rabbits, and horses to have a valid Premises ID to ENTER the 2009 Fremont County Fair.
Premises ID's MUST be on file in the Extension Office BEFORE your County Fair entry will be accepted.
If you turned in a Premises ID in 2007-08 and you are keeping your project(s) at the same location you do not need to turn it in again.
If you move your projects to a new location, you will need a new Premises ID for that location.
COOL – County of Origin Labeling of Market Livestock Projects
ALL market Goats, Sheep, and Swine MUST turn in a COOL Declaration NO LATER than that species' weigh day in May. All Market Chickens MUST turn in a COOL Declaration NO LATER than the Fremont County Fair Entry Deadline.
Please go back and read the article on COOL in the January 2009 4-H Update. If you have any further questions feel free to contact Tommy at 276-7390.
All 4-H members with market animal projects (beef, goats, rabbits, poultry, sheep or swine) as well as horse projects are REQUIRED to take a written test covering educational information regarding that species.
4-H members MUST take the written tests at the Extension Office between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. or between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. (you may NOT start a test after 4:00 p.m. ) If you need help reading the test you need to make prior arrangements (an appointment) so we can have someone help you. Monday through Friday between June 2 and July 2nd.
We will be using the same study guides as last year. If you don ' t have a study guide you may pick one up in the Extension Office.
Remember, the written test is one of the sections used to determine Supreme Champions in Market Beef, Goats, Sheep and Swine. Final results of the written tests will be made available after the county fair. In the case of a tie score, the highest score on the following sections will be used as the tie breaker: 1) short answer section, 2) animal identification, 3) matching section, 4) circle the correct answer section, and 5) true or false section. In the case of multiple scores of 100, ties will be allowed. Written test awards will be presented at Achievement Night.

We have an ARBA Judge coming to talk about Genetics, a local Rabbit Breeder will talk about worms under the cages, and a former 4-H member will do a showmanship workshop. Cost for Colorado State Fair nomination: $2.00 per head Fremont County fee.

PQA (Pork Quality Assurance) Youth Training Requirements

Youth ages 8-11 (Beginners) must attend a PQA/MQA class annually.
Youth ages 12-14 (Intermediate) must attend annual training or complete and pass a test-out examination that will be good until the next age group.
Youth ages 15-18 (Advanced) must attend annual training or complete and pass a test-out examination that will be good until the next age group.

To test out - you MUST come into the Extension Office and take a written test prepared by the National Pork Board. You MUST score at least a 70. You can take the test up to 3 times. If you don't pass the test on 3 tries you MUST take a PQA/MQA class. PQA Manuals are in at the Extension Office.
If you want to test out – tests MUST be completed by June 16 so if you don't pass you can still attend the last PQA/MQA class.

Meat Quality Assurance (MQA) Youth Training Requirements
(based on 4-H age)
You may take any one of the three (3) PQA/MQA classes

June 17, 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. , 4-H Building
All 4-H members exhibiting a market and/or breeding project are required to attend a Meat Quality Assurance class the first year they are in this project as a Junior (8 - 13 years of age) and the first year they are in the project as a Senior (14 and up) to be eligible to exhibit these projects at the Fremont County Fair.
You may attend one of the following sessions in Fremont County or with prior approval you may attend a MQA class in another county.
Junior and Senior 4-H members who MUST take the MQA class in 2009
We make every attempt to provide an accurate list, however if you are in your first year in an animal project or are 14 years of age and you are not on this list, you still MUST take the MQA class to be eligible to exhibit at the Fremont County Fair. It is your responsibility to make sure you have met the MQA requirement. Please call the Extension Office and get your name on our list.

MQA On-line recommended for Seniors: If you have already taken a PQA/MQA class as a Junior and you need to re-certify as a Senior I recommend you do that on the web. This site has study information and a test that 4-H members can print off, take, and turn in to the Extension Office to meet the MQA requirements. We have had several seniors take MQA on the web and they really liked it. The website is: http://livestock.colostate.edu/youth/MQA . If you choose to do MQA on the web you MUST have your completed test turned in to the Extension Office no later than 5:00 p.m. , Friday, June 12. After June 12 or if you fail the test you will be required to take the remaining PQA/MQA class on June 17.

Fremont County 4-H Code of Conduct
Fremont County 4-H members, leaders, parents and other adults participating in 4-H activities will:
1. Adhere to program rules, curfews, dress codes, policies, and rules of the facility being used.
2. Conduct themselves in a courteous, respectful manner, use appropriate language, exhibit good sportsmanship, and provide positive role models.
3. Abstain from illegal behaviors, use of alcohol, illegal or illicit drugs, and tobacco during 4-H events and activities.
4. Fully participate in scheduled activities.
5. Respect other's property and privacy right.
6. Abstain from child abuse (physical and/or verbal) and harassment.
7. Accept personal and group responsibility for behavior including any financial damages.
8. Adhere to rules of safety.
9. 4-H members are NOT allowed to drive to out-of-county 4-H events or activities. It is expected that 4-Her = s will be driven by parents, officially enrolled leaders or extension agents. In case of extenuating circumstances, parents may designate another adult (at least 21 years of age) to drive provided a Travel Authorization Form is completed and turned in to the extension office at least 24 hours PRIOR to the event or activity.
Consequences for violating any of these codes may include removal, at the individual's expense and without refund, from participation in the event in which the code of conduct has been violated; restitution or repayment of damages; sanctions on participation in future 4-H events; forfeiture of financial support for the event; removal from offices held, etc.
Age, offices held in the 4-H organization, presence of an adult or other perceived status are not grounds for behavior outside of established guidelines.
It is the responsibility of ALL program participants to reinforce the code of conduct and intervene when necessary to enforce the rules. You will achieve greater success in resolving problems and conflicts by focusing on the issue or behavior and not on the person.
1. A 4-H member must complete a project this year to re-enroll in that project next year.
2. Completion of a Family & Consumer or General Project requires:
A. Be enrolled in the project by the appropriate date.
B. Complete the specific requirements for the project as listed in the Fremont County Fair Book for the current year which includes a completed record book.
C. Do a demonstration approved by your Main 4-H Club Leader.
D. Exhibit the project. The project should be exhibited at the Fremont County Fair: If it is not possible to exhibit at the fair, the member can still complete this requirement by making arrangements with the Fremont County Extension Office to exhibit at another time and place. The exhibit would have the same requirements as listed for exhibition at the Fremont County Fair.
3. Completion of a Livestock Project requires:
A. Be enrolled in the project by the appropriate date.
B. Own the animal and have it in your possession by the appropriate date.
C. Complete the specific requirements for the project as listed in the Fremont County Fair Book.
D. Do a demonstration approved by your Main 4-H Club Leader.
E. Exhibit the project. The project should be exhibited at the Fremont County Fair: If it is not possible to exhibit at the Fair, the member can still complete this requirement by making arrangements with the Fremont County Extension Office to exhibit at another time and place. The exhibit would have the same requirements as listed for exhibition at the Fremont County Fair.
F. Your completed project record book must be turned in to the Extension Office by the official deadline date and be certified as complete.
G. In the event your animal should die or become injured and is unable to be exhibited a completed project record book, with a complete explanation of the situation, must be turned in to the Extension Office by the official deadline date for completion.
4. Officially Dropping a Project. The 4-H Member has until June 1 of this year to officially drop a project that they are unlikely to finish, thus allowing them to repeat that project next year if desired. A project dropped after June 1 will be considered incomplete.
