4-H Enrollment Information for Members and Volunteers
As you may or may not know by now, we are transitioning to a new online 4-H enrollment system called 4HOnline beginning October 1, 2009.
All county offices will be ‘starting' fresh and to do that they need your assistance. The biggest change you will notice as 4-H members and families is that when a county staff member enters/updates your enrollment information the 4-H Online system will automatically email the account that was provided on the enrollment form. So don't be alarmed when you receive an email from “4HOnline ….. Congratulations you have been enrolled in 4-H.” This is not ‘junk' mail so please do not delete!
If your email address has changed be sure to provide your county office with all your current information on the new enrollment forms that will be provided. If you do not have an email account there is no need to worry, you will still receive all the important information via regular mail.
Questions? Please contact your local county Extension Office.

Why Does 4-H Council Need Money?
Money, money, money! Is that all we do? A tremendous amount of time and energy is spent raising money for 4-H Council. If you don't believe it, just ask the nine Council officers, two Council advisors, two extension agents, and the office support staff.
It is my goal in this article to tell you how we earn it, and then what we do with the money earned. The largest fundraiser is the county fair concession stand , earning several thousand dollars each year. It's a lot of hard work, but worth it in the long run. Reasonably priced food and drinks are available to our families and money goes in the bank. We also do concessions for smaller events throughout the year such as horse shows and tractor pulls.
Each fall, we sell cookbooks and calendars . We depend on individuals to help us take orders for these items. Not a large fundraiser, but they are good products and easy to sell.
The first weekend of each December we host a craft sale . We earn money from the booth rental as well as the chili & soup meal. This is a joint project for clubs to earn money, although only a few of them take advantage of the opportunity. Clubs can sell tickets for the meal, at $5 each, and half of the money goes directly back to their club. The other half goes to 4-H Council to pay for the chili or soup. What a deal, right? Why not participate this year to help out your club? No investment and lots of potential for return. We do it because it brings customers to the craft sale and it helps the clubs.
The next event is the Sweetheart Dinner . This next year it will be on February 13, at the County Administration Building. Council officers, parents, and volunteers transform the building into a wonderland with lights and flowers. They prepare and serve a beautiful dinner to their guests.
The last fundraiser happens throughout the year, and depends on office staff to maintain. Drinks and snacks are sold in the extension office with 4-H Council earning the profits.
So now that you know what we do to earn the money, how is it spent? The largest commitment made by 4-H Council is to pay for half of every child's or chaperone's registration to 4-H camps and conferences through the year. There are at least eight different camps available every year for youth to attend. Fremont 4-H Foundation also pays ¼ of the cost, which allows young people to attend for only ¼ of the actual cost of the camp or conference. The only requirement to access these funds is to attend a meeting of 4-H Council, and write two thank you notes.
Other financial responsibilities assumed by 4-H Council include:
*Yearly pins, certificates and awards for members and leaders
*Outstanding leader plaques
*Monthly phone service at the 4-H Building
*Monthly trash service at the 4-H Building
*Kitchen supplies & equipment in the 4-H Building
*4-H Marketing materials to promote 4-H in Fremont County
*Annual swim party & picnic free for all members & families
*Bowling party free for all members & families
*Hosting the pre-fair reception for superintendents & fair board
*Annual contribution toward Pathfinder Park development
*Community service projects as needed throughout each year
*Meeting expenses, refreshments & supplies for Council meetings
All of this amounts to more than $12,000 each year. Money earned, and money spent. Is it any wonder we work so hard? Through all of this our Council officers and other youth who volunteer to help learn countless life skills, including but not limited to:
*Event planning
*Teamwork
*Problem solving
*Making change, counting money, writing checks
*Meeting & dealing with people
*Public speaking
*Food safety
*Food preparation
*Organization
*Citizenship
*Leadership
*Community service
*Empathy
*Responsibility
*Respect
*Reliability
I could go on and on, but I'm sure you understand. So when you hear that once again, 4-H Council is working to earn money, please remember that although we work hard, it's worth it all in the end. Can we count on you to help us? In the long run, we are all winners!
2009 Livestock, Horse, and Dog Record Book Judging
We had 283 livestock, horse and dog record books turned in for judging. The results were 126 blue ribbons, 55 red ribbons, and 43 white ribbons. In addition, we had 38 record books judged as complete and 21 incompletes.
The “Best Record Book” awards will be announced at Achievement Night, October 15 at Florence High School on Hwy 67. All record books can be picked up by each club's MAIN LEADER beginning
October 19 at the Extension Office.
This year we had 30 leaders and parents help with the judging. Thank you to the following people who helped judge:

Next year's (2010) record book dates will be:
Wednesday, August 11, 2010, 5:00 p.m. – ALL livestock, horse, dog and pet record books for judging and/or completion due in Extension Office by 5:00 p.m.
Saturday, August 14, 2010, 8:00 a.m. – record book judging. Judging will be at the 4-H Building with breakfast starting at 8:00 a.m. with judging immediately following. Judging usually lasts until about 2:00 p.m. We ask that people who come to judge get there on time and stay until we are finished! REMEMBER, IF A CLUB IS NOT REPRESENTED BY AT LEAST ONE ADULT (NO YOUTH) TO HELP JUDGE, THAT CLUB'S RECORD BOOKS WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR RECORD BOOK AWARDS. THEY WILL BE JUDGED ON A COMPLETE/INCOMPLETE BASIS AND NOT SCORED!
Each club's main leader is responsible for getting adults from their club to help judge. We know a year in advance when the judging will be so there should not be conflicts. You can send as many adults to help as you want. The more people we have to help judge, the sooner we get through. If you have any questions about Record Books or judging, call Tommy at 276-7390.
Thursday, August 19, 2010, 6:30 p.m. – record book committee for best books. We ask that each club send one (1) adult to serve on this committee to check the record books that are in a tie for Best Book.
Dog Training will begin January 5 th , 2010
6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the 4-H Building
NO DOGS
At this meeting
***Must be enrolled in 4-H Dog program for 2009-2010, Dog Certificates and Animal Care Form due with enrollment.
It's election time! We need new officers! On Wednesday, November 4 , elections will be held for
4-H Council officers for 2010. President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Alternate Senators and Senators need to be at least 14 years old. Secretary and Reporter do not have a minimum age, but need to be mature enough to do the job.
Probably the most important requirement is to commit to regular attendance! We meet the first Wednesday of every month. Officers meet at 6:00 p.m. for a planning meeting, and then the entire council meets at 7:00 p.m. Meetings are not usually long.
Senators and Alternate Senators must be able to attend at least three statewide meetings also. Leadership Development Conference is held in January, District Retreat in March and Annual Conference in June.
If you would like to run for an office, come to the November 4 Council meeting, prepared to introduce yourself and tell why you should be elected. It's as simple as that. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn leadership skills and take your 4-H experience to another level. If you have questions, call the Extension Office and talk to Verla.
DON'T FORGET - Every club should send five members to vote in the 4-H Council elections. This is your council-make it work for you!
Tami Ratkovich's term as advisor to 4-H Council is ending. Another advisor is needed. It's a two-year commitment. Alidra Walker will be continuing on for her second year. Pick up a one-page application in the Extension Office. Or, call and we can email it to you. We need dedicated people to help keep our county-wide activities running smoothly. No experience necessary, on-the-job training is available!
If you have questions about the duties or responsibilities, call one of the former advisors, or call the Extension Office. Application deadline is November 12.
4-H Clubs & Programs
Don't miss out on this opportunity to raise funds for your club!
Sell tickets for the Craft Sale chili/soup meal. Half of the money comes back to your club! Tickets are $5.00 each – your club earns $2.50 each! Tickets are available in the Extension Office.
Can you help out with the Craft Sale? Make a pot of soup? Help out in the kitchen? Meet & greet the vendors? We need lots of helpers to make this successful. Please call the Extension Office to let us know how you can help!
