Welcome to Gilpin County Extension!
Extension is the front door to Colorado State University providing
the extensive knowledge, research capabilities and resources of
this premier land-grant university to Coloradans from all walks
of life. Extension is dedicated to serving current and future needs
of Coloradans by providing educational information and programs
that safeguard health, increase livelihood, and enhance well being.
The Gilpin County Extension office is here to help you with issues
about living in the mountains. Look through this site for mountain
gardening, fire mitigation, forest health, wildlife issues, 4-H
youth development and more. Programs are available to all without
discrimination.

Upcoming programs
Sept 13 1-3 pm Field class on ID and treatment of Mountain
Pine beetle. If you’re unsure how to recognize a
newly infested tree, join United States Forest Service entomologist
Jeff Witcosky for real hands-on identification and discussion of
treatment options. Fall is the best time to treat your trees! Road
and Bridge Log Yard. MUST RSVP!
Sept 27 1-3 pm $5 How to sow wildflower seeds for maximum
success. Fall is the best time for sowing seeds. Hands-on
class! Exhibit Barn.
Oct 18 : 1-4 pm Beyond Beetlemania: Living in Forested
Communities. Join Extension and the Colorado State Forest
Service in a workshop that will cover the latest on the status of
Mountain Pine beetle in Gilpin County, treatment options, managing
your own forests for maximum resiliency against any insect, updates
on Federal Forest treatment plans/activities, and updates on current
forestry related legislation. Gilpin County Community Center MUST
RSVP!
Oct 24 3-5 pm. Winterizing your home– how
to save on your heating bill this winter. MUST RSVP! Exhibit Barn
Nov 6 6-8 pm Solar electricity for homeowners. Community
Center. Considering installing solar panels to power your home?
This class will cover basic terms, considerations, costs, and incentives.

Hours: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from
9-2. If you want to be sure to find someone outside of the
posted office hours, call ahead of time, or schedule an appointment
--the Extension Agent's job frequently requires working
away from the office.
Please drop by the office to pick up fact sheets, get advice, check
out the informative displays in the lobby, pick up applications,
etc.
OFFICE LOCATION
We are located right next to the Gilpin
County Community Center (click here to see map) just off of
Highway 46.
Directions: Coming from the North,
head South on 119 (approx 15 miles South of Nederland). Turn left
(East) when you come to the intersection with hwy 46 (there is also
a sign for the Justice Center and Golden Gate Canyon State Park).
Drive approx 1 mile and turn right onto Norton Drive (across from
the Dory Hill campground). Park in the same parking lot as the Gilpin
Community Center - the Extension office is the building without
the flag.
Coming from the South: Drive North on 119 approx.
7 miles past BlackHawk. Turn right at the intersection with hwy
46 (there is also a sign for the Justice Center and Golden Gate
Canyon State Park). Drive approx 1 mile and turn right onto Norton
Drive (across from the Dory Hill campground).
Coming from the East: Drive West
on Hwy 46 (Golden Gate Canyon Road) approx 4 miles past the Golden
Gate Canyon State Park visitor center. Turn left onto Norton Drive.
(If you hit Hwy 119, you've gone too far). Park in the same parking
lot as the Gilpin Community Center - the Extension office is the
building without the flag.
