What is the Colorado Master Gardener Program?
Colorado Master Gardener volunteers assist the local office of CSU
Extension to extend knowledge-based information on home
gardening into the community. Visit the State
Master Gardener Website.
TRAINING
Program participants hone their knowledge through 11 weeks of classes
in horticulture taught by Colorado State University professors,
specialists and agents. Beginning with basic botany, the training
program builds upon plant health topics such as: soil composition,
disease diagnosis, insect identification and control, plant growth
and identification, and high altitude gardening.
Training for Gilpin County Master Gardeners takes place in Boulder.
The Colorado Master Gardener program in Boulder County offers both
day and evening training during the year: January through March
classes are held one day per week during business hours; September
through December classes are held in the evenings two days per week.
*Applications are due Nov 1 for the spring classes, and August
1 for the fall classes.*
VOLUNTEERISM
During the first year, Colorado Master Gardener Apprentices return
50 hours of volunteer time to the program by September 30 of that
year. This can be tailored to suit the individual, with choices
of volunteer opportunities including writing articles, working on
the website, working on demonstration gardens, working with elementary
schools, writing news articles, and mentoring youth. Special events
and projects may change from season to season.
After the first season with our program, Colorado Master Gardeners
continue to get 12 hours of training and give 24 hours of volunteer
service.

Cost of the program: $125 dollars
Fees cover fact sheet books and class handouts, instructor’s
travel expenses, and other local program delivery costs.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Applicants are screened by the application form and by interviews.
The interview also gives the applicant time to ask questions about
