Eagle's Nest/Owl's Roost

Outdoor Environmental Discovery Day Camp

Eagle's Nest Owl's Roost is a one-week day camp for children entering the 4th or 5th grade in the fall of the following year. Registration forms are available in February of each year and can be requested by calling 303-271-6620.

 

The program is sponsored by Colorado State University Extension and the Jefferson County Public School District.

In the Owl's Roost program, children entering 4th grade discover animal habitats and learn outdoor survival skills while having fun hiking and playing environmental discovery games.

Monday - Chatfield Reservoir: Visit a fish hatchery and build your own mini "pond".
Tuesday
- Upper White Ranch:  Sharpen outdoor survival skills & learn seven items to
 keep safe.
Wednesday - Lower White Ranch: 
Go on a treasure hunt for animal and insect homes.
Thursday - Elk Meadow: 
Find out how the sun makes energy for every living thing.
Friday - Chicago Creek:
   Explore forests and discover how plants & animals get food and shelter.

Eagle's Nest

 

In the Eagle's Nest program children entering 5th grade in the fall learn about Colorado's forest trees, explore a mine, and learn what it was like to live in the gold rush days.  Children will also visit a glacier and learn about alpine environments.

Monday - Reynold's Ranch:  Figure out how to identify trees by smelling and touching them.
Tuesday - Golden Gate State Park: 
Pretend to be different animals and act out how they live.
Wednesday - Nevadaville & Bald Mountain Cemetery: 
Find out what it was like to live in  a mining town, and learn to pan for gold!
Thursday - Mt. Evans Outdoor Education lab and Edgar Mine:
  Discover the wonders of mountains and go on an exciting tour of Edgar Mine.
Friday - Saint Mary's Glacier: 
Not only will you learn about glaciers, but you will get to slide safely down one!

 

Outstanding Educators

Our educators are trained professionals who are First Aid/CPR certified.  The children are placed in small groups.  Each camp week is limited to the first 44 children who register.  A minimum of 30 children is required to hold a weekly program. 

Please note:  The program involves moderate hiking and may not be suitable for children with certain health conditions.
