**RULES FOR COMPLETING
San Miguel Basin 4-H PROJECTS
for the 2009-2010 Year**

SMB Headlines . . . Hot Off the Press

Enrollment/Re-enrollment Date for
San Miguel Basin

The date established for the San Miguel 4H program to begin taking of enrollments is mid- November. There will be a new on line 4H data entry system authorized through CSU Extension that will be utilized for all enrollments to the 4H program. This 4H ONLINE system will take affect shortly.

San Miguel 4H program completed registration and enrollment packet must be postmarked or received in our Office, on or before December 18th 0f 2009 at 3:45 pm. All regular member enrollments received after December 18th will be assessed an additional late fee of $10. Late fees do not apply to Cloverbud enrollments or 4H Leader applicants.

Please remember that all 4H ages are based on the January 1, 2010 date.
Attention - CSU – User Fees = Increase for 4H statewide. State 4-H Fees to be raised for the 2010-2011 4-H Year.

Jeff Goodwin, Assistant Director for Colorado 4-H Youth Development Programs, recently announced that the $5 state 4-H fee that has been collected from Colorado 4-H members in organized clubs for the last five years will be raised to $15 for the 2010-2011 4-H year. The decision to make this change was made after much discussion with 4-H agents from around the state. The 4-H Roundtable (State 4-H Advisory Committee) was also consulted extensively on this issue.
Goodwin states that this increase was needed in order to maintain state staff and special project support that is necessary to manage the Colorado 4-H program. Goodwin also adds that he understands how this fee increase might put a strain on some county 4-H programs or 4-H families given the current economic climate; however, this is why the announcement is being made
over a year and a half before it is to take effect.
Families must also remember that when the $15 state 4-H fee is carried out over 12 months it equates to $1.25 per month per 4-H member—or 4 cents per day. Even when county fees and project costs are added in, 4-H is still the biggest and best bargain in town when it comes to youth development programs.
As always, if a family with economic struggles wants their kids to be in 4-H, we will find a way to make it happen. If you are in such a situation, please contact the county Extension office for information about scholarship programs or alternative payment plans that can be set up so that every young person has the opportunity to be in 4-H.
If you have questions about this increase, feel free to contact the county Extension office or even speak to Jeff Goodwin at 970.491.1152.
How does this affect San Miguel Basin 4H Program, and the
bottom line for each of you?
Prior to 2010, 4H members and their families have spent an annual $15 enrollment fee in San Miguel. According to our local district 10 4H program – fellow 4H offices;
(Mesa, Delta and Montrose) on average are collecting twice that much at an enrollment fee that equaled $30.

How has the earlier enrollment fees been spent –
let’s find out 4H Enrollment Fees prior to 2010 = $15
CSU User Fees = $5
Books and Manuals - typically
$12 per youth
Insurance carried - $1 per youth
Profit kept for San Miguel 4H
Program = non existent
Due to the mandated raise of user fee cost through CSU,
San Miguel 4H families will now be spending $30. How
does this break down per member? Let’s find out. ....

(The following rules apply only to regular age 4-H members (ages 8-18) ~not for Clover buds~.)

  • Attend at least six (6) regular club meetings, one activity, and a community service project. (4-H is a year around activity, i.e. 12 months, so six meetings are only one half of them.)

  • All members must give a demonstration on the project area for the project you are enrolled in. If you are in more than one project, you can do one demonstration in one of your project areas for the year.

  • All members must compete in a SMB Fair showmanship class or interview judging for each project.

  • Records for animal projects must include all animals in project from the time of enrollment until completion of project. This includes any and all animals brought to initial weigh in for livestock, multiple breeding stock, or multiple horses, dogs, or pets. Your profit/loss for a livestock project includes all animals/inventory you start and/or end with.

  • Members will have the opportunity to attend a Record Book Workshop to assure all members grade at least a 70% on their record books. All livestock members must attend a "thank you" note writing class.

  • After fair, record books must be completed and turned in on time with a thank you to buyers (addressed and stamped). When graded, the records must achieve at least a 70% or better for member to re-enroll the next year in that project.

(4-H Programs are available to all youth ages 5-18 regardless of their ability to pay fees.)
